Best Breweries from Grand Rapids to the Lakeshore

Michigan takes its beer seriously, and West Michigan might take it the most seriously of all. We've got Beer City USA on one end and a string of lakeshore taprooms on the other, which means there is genuinely no bad direction to drive if what you're after is a good pint and a patio.

So let's talk breweries, from downtown Grand Rapids all the way out to the water.

Grand Rapids: Beer City USA, Officially

I'm not exaggerating the nickname, Grand Rapids has been crowned Beer City USA multiple times in USA Today's reader poll, and it's home to more than 40 breweries on the Beer City Ale Trail. This is not a scene you stumble into, it's a scene the whole city has been building on purpose for decades.

A few must-hits if you're doing Grand Rapids:

Founders Brewing Co. is the brewery that put Grand Rapids on the beer map in the first place, and it's still a major destination today, with tours, live music, and a massive taproom that anchors the whole scene.

Brewery Vivant might be the most unique stop on this list. It's housed in a former funeral home chapel, and it specializes in Michigan farmhouse ales made with local ingredients, alongside French and Belgian-inspired food. Order the Big Red Coq and try not to feel a little fancy about it.

HopCat started right here in Grand Rapids back in 2008 before expanding across the Midwest, and the original downtown location is still the place to go if you want a genuinely massive tap list alongside seriously good bar food (the beer cheese and pretzels are non-negotiable).

South Haven & Saugatuck: Small Towns, Big Beer

Don't let the smaller size fool you, South Haven and Saugatuck both punch above their weight on the beer front.

Saugatuck Brewing Co. is a local staple with a laid-back beer garden vibe, the kind of place where you order a flight, grab an antique-shopping souvenir next door, and call it a perfect Saturday.

The Mitten Brewing Company, with a Saugatuck-area presence, brings a fun, baseball-themed personality along with genuinely good pizza to pair with the beer.

Holland: New Holland Brewing

Holland's beer scene has serious pedigree, largely thanks to New Holland Brewing Co., one of the most established names in Michigan craft beer and a training ground for some of the state's other top brewers (the founder of Brewery Vivant actually got his start here). It's a great stop whether you're a serious craft beer person or just want a solid pint downtown.

Grand Haven: An Ale Trail of Its Own

Grand Haven has quietly built a genuinely impressive lineup of its own, and honestly, this town deserves its own beer crawl.

Odd Side Ales is housed in a historic piano factory, and it's known for a quirky, boundary-pushing approach to brewing, think coffee-infused IPAs and barrel-aged stouts. The taproom itself has serious character to match the beer.

Grand Armory Brewing and Burzurk Brewing Company round out the local favorites, both known for a solid, welcoming taproom experience that fits right into a Grand Haven evening.

If you want to go further afield, Trail Point Brewing Company in nearby Allendale and Coopersville Brewing Company, sitting right between Grand Rapids and the lakeshore, make for a great detour on the way out to the water.

Muskegon: Underrated and Worth the Drive

Muskegon rounds out the trail with a genuinely strong lineup, Pigeon Hill Brewing Company is a consistent local favorite, and Unruly Brewing Co. and Fetch Brewing Company add even more variety to a scene that doesn't get talked about enough outside the immediate area. If you're doing a full lakeshore beer trail, don't skip this stop just because it's the last one on the map.

Building Your Own Ale Trail

Here's an idea for a weekend: start downtown in Grand Rapids, work your way west through Holland, and finish out at the lakeshore in Grand Haven or Muskegon with a sunset and a pint in hand. It's basically the perfect West Michigan day, good beer, good company, and a view at the end of it.

If you've been picturing what it would be like to have a whole ale trail of favorite local spots just minutes from home, that's exactly the kind of West Michigan life I love helping people find.

Got a favorite brewery I missed? Let me know, I've got plenty of "research" left to do.
